LIGHTNING REVENANT!!([glow=red,2,300](razor)[/glow]
Author's Note:
==================================
Fools! I read through a few Razor guides here at Dota-Allstars.com and at a certain DOTA website, and realised no one knew understood the full potential of Razor. In my opinon, any guide that does not address Razor's problem of attack animation or doesn't make use of his insane pushing ablity should not be taken seriously. True, Razor is a hero that is heavily dependent on his items and needs to acquire them before unleashing his full power, but thats what hes best at: Acquiring items. Why? Razor is a great farmer! Once he get the proper items, killing heros will be a breeze with his insane IAS and damage. Enough ramblings, lets move on to the Hero Overview.
Introduction: Hero Overview
Razor - The Lightning Revenant
Range: 550
Move Speed: 295
Primary: AGI
Str: 17 + 1.9
Agi: 22 + 2.5
Int: 14 + 1.8
Base Damage: 37 - 39
HP: 473
Mana: 182
HP Regen: 0.76
Mana Regen: 0.57
Attack Speed: 1.33 (+ 22% IAS)
Armor: 2.1
Horribly low base damage, making early-game farming difficult for less experienced users. Base strength is pretty low, causing his HP at the start to be really pathetic also. Base Aglity is pretty sweet, but the Aglity gained per level could be better. Truth be told, his overall stats is pretty bad, which explains why he is a hero that depends heavily on items.
Lets take a look at the Analysis:
Pros:
Insane Attack Speed
Insane Movement Speed
Insane Late Gamer!
Cons:
Weak early game
Really Low life
No escape skill (WW, blink)
I. Hero Skills
Frenzy ( R )
Increases attack speed for 20 seconds, at the cost of taking additional damage.
Level 1 - 25% increase, 5% damage taken increase.
Level 2 - 50% increase, 10% damage taken increase.
Level 3 - 75% increase, 15% damage taken increase.
Level 4 - 100% increase, 20% damage taken increase.
Mana Cost: 80/ 90/ 110/ 130 Mana
Cooldown: 40 Seconds
Frenzy does NOT boost Movement Speed.
Does not Stack with Mask Of Madness's Frenzy
"Frenzy" means "crazy and wicked" in rough Japanese translation, which really fit the skill. Its used in sentences like "dai jo bu frenzy sensei-duno?" and "Ha bo jo ri ya frenzy!" However, shouting "frenzy!" as a stand-alone word is considered rude and vulgar, and may result in duels to the death by angry and insulted people during olden times.
Pretty neat infomation huh?
Nah, just joking, it doesn't mean anything in Japanese. Lets go on with the real skill description:
This skill is the reason why you own. 100% IAS is probably the best steroid spell to boost your IAS, beating even the notorious Clinkz's strafe or MoM's version of Frenzy. As a rule, % skills should be maxed in later stages of the game since the bonuses the skill add will be better on during late-game instead of early-game. Similarly, fixed damage nukes should be maxed early to use it to its fullest potential before the damage dulls in later stages.
The only bad point about this is the 20% increased damage taken. As such, its another reason why this spell must not be learnt during the early stages of the game! Razor already is a very fragile hero early game, and taking increased damage will only serve to worsen that. Seeing that early-game is more dependent on spells, and less on normal attacking raw power, the increased IAS wouldn't help as much as it would late in the game too.
Chain Lightning ( C )
Hurls a bolt of damaging lightning at a target enemy that jumps to nearby enemies. Each jump deals less damage.
Level 1 - 75 damage, jumps 3 times.
Level 2 - 150 damage, jumps 5 times.
Level 3 - 225 damage, jumps 7 times.
Level 4 - 290 damage, jumps 9 times.
Mana Cost: 90/ 105/ 125/ 145 Mana
Cooldown: 7 Seconds
One of the most underrated spells in the game. This is your very own nuke in the game, to be spammed as you deem fit during early game since it is the only mana-costing skill you'll have at that stage of the game. Most enemy heros view Razor as an easy kill and they forgot the power of harassment this spell provides. Whenever you have full mana, zap them to your heart's content! Remember, when using this spell, to click on the enemy hero instead of choosing a random creep, as it does less and less damage after every bounce.
As a rule, fixed damage nukes should be maxed early game as that is when most of the gameplay is based on spells and nukes instead of normal attacks. Once the game progresses on to mid-game, nukes get weaker and weaker. So, this skill is to be maxed immediately, otherwise, don't touch it at all. Reasons why you should learn this skill are included below, but you can skip this if facing tough nukers and harassers.
Unholy Fervor ( U )
Increases the movement speed and life regeneration rate of Razor.
Level 1 - 3% movement, 0.5 HP/ sec regeneration bonus.
Level 2 - 5% movement, 1 HP/ sec regeneration bonus.
Level 3 - 8% movement, 1.5 HP/ sec regeneration bonus.
Level 4 - 10% movement, 2 HP/ sec regeneration bonus.
Unholy Fervor stacks with Satyr Hellcaller's Unholy Aura
Your free Boots of Speed and Ring of Regeneration. This aura helps you to absorb harassment early-game and survive. The movement speed bonus means you can actually RUN out ganks quick often! An important skill to be maxed early for to help Razor survive harassment and escape danger quite easily. This aura is what gives Razor his insane movement speed.
Storm Seeker ( K )
Summons a storm that permenantly follows Razor. Every few seconds, it strikes Razor's enemies within 500 AoE with savage lightning bolts.
Level 1 - Deals 60 damage.
Level 2 - Deals 90 damage.
Level 3 - Deals 120 damage.
Lightning strikes every 3 seconds (approx)
Affects Invisible Units
Your ultimate. Basically, this ultimate hits every enemy unit every few seconds, dealing damage to all of them. This includes enemy chickens (i love getting 15 gold from killing chickens) This ultimate was specially designed for mainly one purpose: Farming. Also a useful spell when enemy heros are chasing you, as they automatically get hit every few seconds. Combined with allied heros, towers, or creeps, you could soon turn the tables and pawn their heads for gold instead of the other way around.
II. Skill Build
1. Unholy Fervor
2. Chain Lightning/Stats
3. Chain Lightning/Stats
4. Unholy Fervor
5. Chain Lightning/Stats
6. Storm Seeker
7. Chain Lightning/Stats
8. Unholy Fervor
9. Unholy Fervor
10. Stats
11. Storm Seeker
12-15. Frenzy
16. Storm Seeker
17-25. Stats
You can skip Chain Lightning for stats early game if you're facing heavy nukers in your lane. If you intend to do this, don't bother to add Chain Lightning at all until you've maxed every other option available
Why This Build?
Unholy Fervor for early-game survival, Chain Lightning for a decent Nuke, while Frenzy is learnt later as its a % skill and would have better bonuses during later stages of the game compared to early-game. Unholy Fervor gives great survivalbility which Razor desperately lacks, while Chain Lightning being a fixed damage nuke should be maxed out early to use it effectively as the damage becomes less and less significant as the game progresses. If facing heavy nukers/harassers, adding stats would be a better option than Chain Lightning since trading nukes against heros with multiple spells to throw at you won't do you any good. (CM, Lina) Storm Seeker, being a farming spell, should be learnt immediately to help Razor farm the items he needs.
Sometimes Razor players get confused and end up adding the wrong skills for all the wrong reasons.
Mistake #1: Maxing Frenzy Early
Some Razor players max frenzy early as they find Razor to be extremely difficult to farm with. True, Razor may be tricky to farm with due to his queer and misleading attack animation, but i will address that soon in my guide. However, maxing Frenzy early maybe actually be a negative bonus, as it increase the damage taken by 20%. Razor already has a weak early-game, so don't make things worse for yourself. Maxing it early is as good as putting up a big "Kill Me' sign.
Mistake #2: Skipping Chain Lightning
Other Razor players do the right skill build, but forgot to learn Chain Lightning. This is a very bad option. Not maxing Chain Lightning means you do not have a decent nuke to fall back on, and basically you are telling the enemy "Hey come on guys! Continue to farm and deny to your heart's content because i can do nothing to stop you!" How do you expect to even attempt to harass the enemy without Chain Lightning? If you're thinking about your normal damage, remember your base damage is pathetically low, almost half of the BeastMaster. Its better to max this skill, and give them the occasional zap to keep them on their toes.
Oh, and don't forget that with insane range and bounce, you can use this to disrupt the enemy heros using potions/flasks! Even if he hugging the tower, chain-lightning the creep nearest to him from a safe point almost always equals to "GG you just wasted your flask and 100 gold".
Mistake #3: Not adding Storm Seeker until lvl 10
Although the first level of Storm Seeker might seem to have really low damage, you must remember storm seeker is a AOE nuke. Think of it as a free 300 (60 X 5) damage on the enemy creep wave every few seconds. Storm Seeker is a ultimate that really improves your farming capabilities, and seeing that you need to farm for an expensive item right from the start of the game, you'll need this skill.
Whats the big deal with Razor's Attack Animation?
Razor's attack animation is extremely misleading. At first, we just see a zap of red lightning shooting out when we command Razor to attack the enemy. Simple right? But then, why do you miss that last hit on the creeps so often with Razor? The red lightning shoots out, hits the creep, and its done right? Wrong. The red lightning Razor shoots out is basically just eye candy. The REAL attack animation is a red 'orb' that shoots out at incredible speed right after the red lightning has finished zapping. As such, Razor's attack animation is actually quite slow, not as fast as the quick lightning suggests it is. Remember this when doing last hit creeping
Unconvinced? Look below.
Due to the 'orb' flying too quickly, I was unable to get a screenshot of the orb in mid-air. But next time you choose Razor, look careful as he attacks and you will understand what I am trying to say. Note that this is actually common knowledge, but I don't see any guide talking about this at all. Only by mastering the speed of the attack animation can you do last hit creeping and farm effectively, so this is actually quite important. In this case, it is better to overestimate than underestimate. Hit the creep earlier than you would had normally, and most of the time you got the kill in the bag!
III. Item Build
A rough overview..
Chicken-Flask-Branches -> Early Game Items -> Radiance -> BoT -> Skadi -> BKB -> Butterfly -> Buriza
-
What you should buy immediately at level 1
Why this Starting Items?! Why no RoR?!
Wondering why no RoR? Firstly, Razor being a hero with 550 range, should be impossibly hard to harass, even for sniper without him getting hit by the creeps as well. And with Unholy Fervor providing regen, you definately don't need another RoR. Take your last hits with your range, retreat, how hard is that? You're not melee, and you won't be tanking hits. However, Razor is still susceptible to 'mini-ambushes', eg that CM hiding at the river, rushing out when you past it and chain nuking you. In this aspect, flasks are much better than an RoR, as unless you got chain-nuked your health will be relatively full, thus no need for RoR, and if your health is red an RoR won't heal enough for you to last in the lane.
As you will be doing intense farming at the beginning, a chicken is great to ferry flasks and other items to and fro the base for you. You basically want to stay in your lane as long as possible to maximise your farming.
Ironwood branches are great for their cost. 57 gold for +1 all stats? Compare that to an ultimate orb! Getting +3 all stats is equivalent to about being 1.5 levels higher.
Remember to toggle your hero as control group "1" while the chicken as control group "2". This makes for easier micro. Remember that to select a chicken quickly, tab "2" twice quickly and to change back to your hero, tab "1" twice quickly. This minimize the time you waste buying items that could be used for farming/denying or even harassing. To toggle control groups use "Ctrl-#", where # is the number.
Remember that your early-game is extremely weak and you need to farm. Even if you can get the kill, but end up killed in the process, there is no point doing so. In fact, letting the enemy hero go means more time for you to farm since during early-game the time taken to respawn is negliable.
REMEMBER! FARM, FARM, FARM! Aim for survival and farming! Retreat to the tower if you sense heros missing. Your early-game is weak. Play it safe.
Optional Early-Game items
Why? (Please note: OPTIONAL!)
Flasks for reasons explained above.
Ring of Basilius is used for spam Chain Lightning more efficiently, especially since it does a fixed 0.65mp regen/sec instead of calculating from your INT, meaning great regen even with your low INT. Its a cheap item too, so getting it won't make too much of a dent in your gold vault.
Observer wards warn you of approaching ganks - Run to the tower!
Remember to use your chicken to ferry these items if you want them.
Getting early-game items are good, but remember they delay your relic, so try to survive without them if you can! Ok, so we've covered the topic of early game items, so whats the core item that we'll be aiming for? Why stress so much on early-game farming? Its because..
Your Goal from now is to farm a Radiance!
Shop: Level 4
Description:
+8% Evasion
+70 Damage
Passive: Immolation
550 Radius
40 Damage/sec Immolation
QUOTE(Malle @ Feb 10 2006, 11:54 PM)
Q: Does radiance give evasion, or does it make opponents miss?
A: It's evasion. Radiance gives the wielder a chance to evade attacks made upon him.
OMG you're asking me to rush a SACRED RELIC?
Yes. That is precisely why i stressed so much on farming and survival early game, even to the extend of teaching you about Razor's attack animation. Your goal is to amass 3800 gold for the Sacred Relic. From then on, the recipe for Radiance shouldn't be a problem with +60 damage. Branches are there to make up for Razor's poor stats, an ROB is great for Chain Lightning spamming, and a chicken can bring you flasks. All these early game items are there to boost your survialbility to help you achieve the relic. With his aura, even without boots he's difficult to chase. WITH boots, hes impossible to catch! If you made a mistake and got sent back to base with only 500 gold, don't hesistate to get the boots of speed. Think of it as an investment.
Why Radiance?
Radiance is easily the best item for Razor. The best. Nothing synergizes better with Razor's ultimate than a Radiance. Combined with 40damage/sec immolation and 120 damage every few seconds from Storm Seeker, you will clear creep waves like theres no tomorrow, with the grand total of 0 mana cost! Once Radiance is in your inventory slot, it opens the door for you to farm like a maniac and amass gold like you've never done before. Simply waltz into the enemy creep wave, humming your favourite tune, as the combimed efforts of your Storm Seeker and Raiance nets you 4 out the 5 creeps you encounter, two of which you didn't even attack, at 0 mana cost!
I can't do it. Its too much for me..
Are you unable to rush a Radiance? Are you new to DOTA? Are you a die-hard Maelstorm fan? Fret not! Maelstorm is available as an alternative solution. When to get it, reasons to get it, reasons why it lacks a lot in comparison with Radiance, are all included in the section below. For less-skilled players, a helpful link would be inDe_eD's micromanagement guide - farming, denying, harassing, and so on.

QUOTE
Radiance VS Maelstorm - this pretty much sums it up
" I guess its ultimately up to your own preference and the actual game itself. I never said "if you suck, don't try it", I said it wasn't advisable for newer players to DOTA. Rushing an expensive item is never a good strategy for new players. I guess the Radiance rush is basically up to personal perference, and the game really. Its not impossible, or crazily hard, as I do it in most of my Razor games, regardless of the enemy.
Its basically going for Radiance with your best, but falling back to Maelstorm if things aren't working out. The big debate of Radiance VS Maelstorm is ultimately up to personal perferance, skill, and the level of your opponents. While Radiance is harder to get, the benefits are significantly higher. Maelstorm is good too, but its nowhere near as powerful. Start the game with an open mind, see how things are going, and adapt.
Rushing a Radiance isn't too hard, SpawnofLucifer's medusa rushes a Radiance too. "
III. ( A ) Items to get after Radiance:
